Many Christians believe that we are necessarily committed to body-soul dualism, while most neuroscientists proceed on the assumption that we are purely physical organisms. Dr. Murphy’s purpose is to show that dualism is not an essential Christian teaching, and that a physicalist account can be reconciled with both Scripture and with a significant part of the Christian tradition, so long as the account does not reduce us merely to the product of physical laws.
